The Yorktowne Hotel has been the nucleus of the York, Pennsylvania community since it was constructed during the Roaring Twenties. It closed for renovations in late 2016, and many residents and businesses alike have been looking forward to its rebirth as an anchor in downtown York.
JDB Engineering has been intimately involved with the project – and not just by providing MEP engineering! Our executive vice president, Tom Leary, PE, has been managing the full-service design team, and our firm has also been conducting research into the history of the venerable building.
Led by Scott Butcher, our team pulled together a video “documentary” about the history of The Yorktowne Hotel, from its genesis through multiple expansions, challenges in the 1950s and 1960s, renovations, and conditions when it closed in 2016. The documentary also discusses the rebirth of the York icon, with plans for its vibrant future.
Demolition of select areas of the hotel and an adjacent structure will begin soon, so the documentary was released in mid-January to celebrate the historic building and this major first step to reclaiming its spot as the nucleus of the local community.
